Netricity Design: Graphic Design Portfolio - Photo Effects
This is more of a showcase of image manipulation skills than practical application although; many of these techniques can be used in web and graphic design. Take a look around and checkout some of the images to get a sense of what we can do with any photo you have.

- A great picture my wife took of our son on Flagler Beach. It would be even better if it wasn't so dull and those ugly shadows were not in it.
- That's better. We've removed the shadows and fixed the color and exposure.
- Lets convert it to black and white for that "nostalgic touch".
- Or that classic sepia look that's so popular.
- Now lets do a special effect. Kind of Anne Geddiesh...

- Here is my cousin up in Maine during a fishing trip. I must admit, I wasn't happy he caught the biggest fish. Would be a great photo if again, it wasn't dull and if that annoying fishing pole was not in the foreground.
- Ahhh...there we go. We've removed the fishing pole and fixed the color and exposure.
- Here is a polaroid effect that highlights the important part of the picture.
- A variation that makes it look as if he's walking out of the photo.
- Yet another variation that highlighs the important part of the picture.

- Here is another picture of my son on his changing table after a bath. Pretty ho hum. Let change this picture up a bit!
- First, lets remove the background and crop the picture to the main subject instead of all that blank wall space. I chose this picture because of the difficulty or removing the background while leaving the hair sticking up behind. Anyone that uses Photoshop will recognize the difficluty with this particular picture. Anyways, enough of the patting myself on the back.
- Lets add a cloud background that's so popular with kids photos.
- Eh...maybe a teddy bear background.
- Is that my son on his changing table after a bath or is he sitting on the beach at sunset with the wind blowing through his hair? I know, I know, you know the answer but would you have known the answer so quickly without the other pictures?
Black and White Photo Restoration

- Here is a classic photo restoration of a black and white photograph. This is my Dad in his younger years posing for a Naval photograph. My father passed many years ago so this picture is pretty important to me.
- First, lets make some changes to the exposure and contrast.
- We'll be able to cheat on the photo because the background is one solid color (well, at least it's supposed to be). So lets go ahead and remove the background so we can replace it without having to do a lot of fixes on the background.
- Ok, new background and we have removed the creases from the picture that was caused by years of handling and fixed the white area that was on his forehead.
- Here we go. We've softened the edges to blend a bit better with the new background and changed the over all tone of the image with a warm sepia color. We've also sharpened the picture a bit and added a bit more contrast.
Comic Book Composition

- Here was a contest entry (that did not win, boo hoo) but I thought it came out pretty good and was a lot of fun to do. It was a composition of pictures with the final result looking like a comic book cover. The first image shows the source pictures I found on the internet that were used to build the composition. And yes,...I'm a Star Wars nerd.
- First, I built a star field and then overlayed the explosion over it to create an interesting background.
- I then arranged the remaining images into an interesting layout. I had to mask out some areas of the source images and did some different color arrangements so that I could acheive the final result.
- Lets add some text and other elements to give it a comic book cover look.
- Add some half toning so that it looks like a printed comic book and we're done. Of course all the steps are not represented here but I've limited myself to only 5 images.

- Built this graphic to show 3D possibilities with the new CS5 version of photoshop. Here we have the background element that will be the base of the sky for our graphic.
- First, lets make some clouds. This consists of 2 3D postcard layers using the render clouds within photoshop. I've mirrored them to try and create a sense of distance.
- Now let's add some 3D models of hot air balloons that I found on the internet. I've given them some base colors and arranged them in 3D space to create some depth. I've also arranged them so that they are mixed in with the clouds to try and give the effect as if we are in a balloon behind them floating through the clouds.
- Now let's add some textures to the hot air balloons. Since were are showing off an Adobe product, the textures of the balloons have an Adobe theme to them. I've also created a wicker basket texture for the baskets below the balloons.
- Add a lens flare, simulated rainbow and some text and there you have it.

- Here is the boy at Star Wars Celebration V in Orlando Florida dressed as his favorite character, Boba Fett. Cool pose but the picture came out terrible. Let's see if we can do something with it.
- First, lets remove all the clutter in the background. I don't know those people!
- We're going to add some text eventually so we need to resize it a bit smaller. We also need to add some dramatic lighting and darken Boba's mask to hide my son's face. We're missing a few steps between 2 and here but again, I'm only showing 5 photos for each demonstration. Anyways, here is the result after several steps of editing.
- Now let's add a mask to make room for the text and make it appear as if they are coming out of the darkness.
- Add some text and there you go. Suitable for framed display and a good momento of my sons experience.
